Switch sales surge continues in Japan

As the Switch surges past 10 million global sales, the Japanese figures continue to put in a barnstorming performance according to Media Create data. Nintendo's new toy sold another 134,000 last week bringing it to 3,158,000 for the first calendar year in Japan. That's as all device sales fell as Japan took a new year break.

With the 4.8 million units sold in the US, that puts the Switch as the fastest selling console over there, it looks like more developers will have to take Nintendo's pup console more seriously. Especially as Sony shows no signs of releasing a PS4 Remote Player and Xbox fumbles around looking to boost sales as it falls into a distant third in the console market.

Older Switch games dominate the top of the chart, with 12 Switch games in the top 20, as new buyers round out their collections.

  • Super Mario Odyssey sits at No. 1 with 1.4 million total sales,
  • Splatoon 2 at No. 2 with 1.76 million total sales,
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at No. 3 with 1.1 million sales.
